Bananas Schneider | Campfire Dessert Recipe

Updated: Jun 20, 2023

On one of the first evenings during our recent fly fishing trip to the Yukon, I prepared a simple campfire dessert recipe. It was well received, to the point where we felt the need to make it every evening thereafter. It is an incredibly simple dish that can be made anywhere at any time. Here is the recipe. Enjoy!

Here's A Campfire Recipe That Will Win Everyone Over!

Ingredients:

2 bananas - sliced fairly thick. Maybe 2-2.5 cm (1 inch) thick.

2 tblsp butter

4 tblsp maple flakes

Optional

1 dash of vanilla extract

1 sprinkle of cinnamon

Preparation:

1) Place the bananas in the skillet along with the butter.

2) Sprinkle the maple flakes on top.

3) Place the skillet straight onto the coals of your campfire (make sure you aren't using a skillet with plastic handles or other coatings). You can also use your camp grill, bar-b-que, or other cooking heat source.

4) Cook until the maple flakes melt and begin bubbling rapidly. We want the mixture to boil for a few minutes. Don't worry, it isn't crucial, but we do want some candying with the sugars. If there are some flakes left unmelted on top of the bananas, feel free to flip the banana pieces partway through the process.

5) Remove from the heat and let cool until serving temp. This is especially good over ice cream, but in a camping scenario ice cream is rare. That is fine though, because we just ate it right out of the skillet and loved it! And no extra dishes to clean up.
